Our core expertise is in bespoke product development, including hardware and software, specifically in the IoT space.


Background

Iceni is a business that develops and commercialises technologies and assists other companies to develop and commercialise technologies. Iceni was founded by Dr Dylan Banks and Dr Rob Fenton, who met at Imperial College London, where Dylan ran a research group in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBE), and Rob was the Director of Research for the IBE. Iceni span out from Imperial College in 2013. We operate across a broad range of technology areas, including a JV with the fellow Southam based company Silson Limited to develop graphene microphones and sensors. We also develop technologies for other companies, both big and small. We currently have a medical device going through clinical trials at Papworth hospital.

Innovation: We are building a containerised vertical farming capability with the Controlled-Environment Farming Commercialisation Centre (CEFCC). The CEFCC is a UK based controlled environment vertical farming company that uses and develops next-generation technologies to grow affordable, high-quality food, with enhanced flavour and shelf-life.


Vertical farming in a controlled environment offers a way to transform agriculture by addressing the challenges faced by UK farmers today. We intend to become leaders in the field and to assist the UK in achieving global pre-eminence in the sector. This project is innovative for several reasons:

  1. it includes the development and integration of novel LED lighting panels, with improved colour spectrum, heat dissipation and energy efficiency, this is not currently available in the market

  2. It includes the integration of novel hydroponic technologies including, nano-bubble nutrient delivery technology and unique bacteria to boost plant growth.


The finished product will be a fully operational commercially focused demonstrator facility that integrates and develops next-generation technologies to accelerate the commercial growth of UK vertical farming companies and grows affordable, high-quality food, with enhanced flavour and enhanced shelf-life.

The product will be scalable and designed to integrate with and test new technologies. The facility has been designed to fit within shipping containers to ensure its portability.

The partners will work under our in-house, full-time, PRINCE2 certified Project Manager. Whos main responsibilities include: (1) Coordinating the delivery of all project activities; (2) Managing the communications plan; and (3) Serving as the project’s contact point for interfaces with the funding authority and other external stakeholders.

Our Requirements

We require a range of inter-disciplinary skillsets to work with us and oversee this complex and multi-disciplinary project, engaging with project stakeholders to deliver a successful outcome.

It is anticipated that the successful partners will provide one or more of the following three consultancy services:

  1. Project Overview Services – we require an independent oversight from leading experts. Key responsibility will be creating and implementing the Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP), responsible for the overarching design, build, test and verification.

  2. Technical Support Services – we require specific expertise in the design of the electrical and mechanical systems. Key responsibility will be providing specialist advice on the growing systems, including the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), lighting systems, nutrient delivery systems and the framework. This forms part of the SEMP.

  3. Growing Services – we require expertise to assist with the design and operation from the growing perspective. Key responsibility will be designing the growth characterization suite.

Procurement Process

Suppliers submitting a proposal will be invited for a telephone interview with our team to determine how you score against our criteria for supply. The interview will cover the following topics and individual sections will be scored, each accounting for 20% of the total value. Proposals with the highest combined score will be awarded the contract:

  • Proposed Solution & Project Approach (20%)

  • Price (20%)

  • Supply Timescale (20%)

  • Delivery Method & Proposed Service Level Agreement (20%)

  • Experience / track record (20%)
